January 6, 2015 – The new year is here and it promises to be a big one for local food. Here are some of the openings we can’t wait for in the first months of 2015. Topping the list has got to be tasting through the new menu at Restaurant 1833 in Monterey, that newly installed chef Jason Franey has promised for the start of the year. Or trying the Italian pastries and deli fare expected at the new Il Grillo, opening soonish in Carmel by the owners of the popular La Balena. In Aptos, we’re looking for the casual Hideout to open where Ma Maison used to be. Then there are two new breweries that can’t open quickly enough, Dan Satterthwaite’s New Bohemian on 41st Avenue and Steel Bonnet in Scotts Valley.
Word has it that Casa Nostra in Ben Lomond is getting ready to open an Italian bakery of its own in Ben Lomond. While the Swift St. crowd in Santa Cruz can’t hardly wait to welcome the opening of the new Venus Spirits tasting room set for the next couple of months.
By summer, we are looking forward to enjoying a new food hall and food truck scene at Abbott Square in Santa Cruz that aims to breathe new life into downtown. You can read our preview here. It’s shaping up to be quite a year and that’s not even considering the big food festivals and fabulous events in store. 2015? Bring it on!
