Steamer Lane Supply Opens in Santa Cruz

Screen Shot 2016-06-14 at 12.21.30 PMJune 14, 2016 – After three years of hard work, unstoppable chef and farmer Fran Grayson has opened Steamer Lane Supply, a combination café and surf shop at Lighthouse Field in Santa Cruz.

“It feels amazing, just a huge sense of relief,” says Grayson, who also owns and operates The Truck Stop food truck. The tiny cafe is now open Tuesday to Sunday from 7am to 7:30pm, serving healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner items and hot drinks to surfers and tourists alike, just a few steps from the waves.

Hot breakfast dishes include quesadillas and grilled rolls with homemade butter and homemade jam. Lunches and dinners feature a variety of arepas, a South American food that can be filled with different ingredients and eaten like a taco. Pastries and grab-and-go sandwiches made with Companion Bakeshop bread are also available.

Hot drinks include: Alta organic brewed coffee; hot cocoa with coconut milk and cardamom, a morning warmer made with coconut milk, turmeric, cinnamon and ginger; and the curative Fire Drink, with ginger, lemon, turmeric, cider vinegar and honey mixed in hot water.

Homemade almond and five spice horchata is also available, along with a strawberry, lemon, ginger cooler.

The shop stocks surf supplies like wax, leashes and sun screen and Steamer Lane Supply tee-shirts, hats and water bottles. Grayson—a surfer herself—says her new spot has a nice vibe: “There are neighborhood people, dog people, surfers and tourists all just hanging out. The community part is really important to me.”

No plastic bottles, bags or packaged foods are used at Steamer Lane Supply. “Because we love the bay so much, we don’t want plastics in the ocean,” she says.
