January 30, 2025 – Carmel’s legendary Forge in the Forest restaurant is set to close permanently Feb. 7 after the current owners were unable to renew their lease.
Founded in 1972, the restaurant is the second major closure in Carmel so far this year.
Italian fine-dining venue La Balena served its last meal this week as its owners Ana and Emanuele Bartolini made plans to relocate to Florence, Emanuele’s home city and the inspiration for much of their food, wine and ambiance.
Forge in the Forest owners Greg and Carolyne Profeta announced the sad news over social media.
“After 15 wonderful years of being open and incredibly successful and willing and financially able to continue with a long term lease, we have been informed by the new landlord that he will not be renewing our lease,” the post reads. “We are devastated by this decision as it has been our privilege and our joy to be part of this community, and to welcome you through our doors.”
Over the years the copper-paneled restaurant has been a blacksmith shop, aviary, post office and the personal residence of a Carmel mayor, as historic plaques and local history attest. The building is currently owned by investor Patrice Pastor.
It has earned perennial votes for Best Outdoor Dining from local residents for its ivy-laden and fireplace-appointed patio, abetted by consistent comfort food, sturdy drinks and experienced staff.
Many romances, including mine, have been sparked over a fireside cocktail at The Forge. It will be sorely missed.
Make plans for one last visit before the restaurant closes for good next Friday.
