March 3, 2015 – We’re excited and proud to report that Edible Monterey Bay has been nominated for three national EDDY Awards. Reviewing more than 1,000 entries from 80 edible magazines across the country, judges selected our spring 2014 cover with the baby chick as one of the year’s best. Our article “In Defense of Big Organic” and our seasonal eating feature on shelling beans were also selected as national finalists. Readers are being asked to VOTE HERE for their favorite finalist, so please help us win. You can vote every day!
A superstar panel of 57 judges were assembled for the contest, including: author Barry Estabrook; Food & Wine magazine editor Dana Corwin; Food52 co-founder Amanda Hesser; chef/author Deborah Madison; professor Marion Nestle; and Beekman Boys Brent Ridge and Jose Kilmer-Purcell.
EMB’s spring 2014 cover is one of 17 finalists. It was shot at Fogline Farms in Soquel by photographer Valery Rizzo and features the talented hands of chef Brad Briske of La Balena restaurant in Carmel. Vote for our cover here.
In the category of best story on the environment or sustainability, deputy editor Deborah Luhrman’s interview with Earthbound Farms co-founder Myra Goodman is one of five finalists. The story “In Defense of Big Organic” includes beautiful photos by Margaux Gibbons and discusses the pros and cons of big organic farms vs small local farms. “It was one of those magic interviews where everything Myra said was so important and so eloquent, that I was scribbling like mad just to keep up,” says Luhrman. “We went back and forth on this topic for well over an hour without stopping and I just knew it was going to make a great article.” Vote for our story here.
For best seasonal recipe feature, our fall story “Shelling Beans: Do you know your hutterites from your tiger eyes?” was also one of five finalists. Written by Jaime Collins, owner of Serendipity Farms in Carmel, the story includes gorgeous illustrations by Bambi Edlund, photos by Michelle Magdalena and recipes by Elizabeth Borelli. Judges said they “loved the encyclopedic information and beautiful drawings.” Vote for our story here.
Reader’s Choice awards will be determined through online voting. You can vote once a day through March 15. There will also be a Critic’s Choice award in each category and winners will be announced at the EDDY Awards dinner in New Orleans on March 19.
