Davenport’s New Cemitas 1 Named for Sandwich

May 29, 2018 – You might think it has something to do with the defunct cement plant that towers over the town, but Davenport’s newest dining spot, Cemitas 1, is named for a type of sandwich popular in the Mexican city of Puebla.

The building on Highway 1 that formerly housed the Davenport Café has been gutted and refurbished in a clean, modern style by owner Andy Potterfield—previously chef at Cremer House. He serves up traditional Mexican street food prepared with local, organic ingredients.

In addition to the cemitas—hefty sandwiches made with meat, cheese and vegetables on a sesame seed bun—there is a short menu of Mexican specialties including shrimp cocktails, queso fundido, corn on the cob doused in chile-lime, guacamole and tacos. Tortillas are made from scratch using corn imported from Oaxacan farmers and the ancient nixtamal process, then pressed and cooked in house.

The fast-casual restaurant is open daily from 11am to 9pm. Visit their website www.cemitasone.com to view the full menu.
