GRIST FOR THE MILL SPRING 2015

gristMillSpr15

To write about
food is to write
about people.

Anything you find on your plate got there because of someone’s inspiration, toil and dedication. Whether they be farmers, bakers, vintners, chefs or distributors, there are countless people to thank for the remarkable food and drink we get to enjoy and celebrate here on the Central Coast.

In this issue, we share some intriguing tales of bone broth brewers, liquid chocolate evangelists, wheat devotees, late night chicken and waffle slingers and even some adventurous home cooks who are using new technology to invite strangers over for dinner. An especially useful story introduces you to people who have been decoding the often confusing labels that have proliferated across food packaging recently. These people expose for you the labels that are nothing more than feel-good greenwashing—and those that mean a lot.

We’re also especially excited to disclose in this issue the seven local food artisans and purveyors that you, our readers, selected in online voting late last year as your 2015 Local Heroes! Inside, you’ll find stories about each one.

Many readers tell us they use the ads in Edible Monterey Bay as a guide to find worthy local people with whom to do business. We can’t encourage you enough to do the same. To make it as easy as possible, we’ve assembled all of our advertising partners in our handy Local Source Guide on p. 68. It’s a feature we’ve offered since our launch in 2011, but you’ll find we now include brief descriptions of each business. Be sure to let these supporters of Edible Monterey Bay know that we sent you, and be sure to thank them with your business. And then please take pride in knowing that you’ve helped make this magazine possible.

Here’s to meeting lots of terrific new local food people this spring!

At Edible Monterey Bay, our mission is to celebrate the local food culture of Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey Counties, season by season. We believe in sustainability, and we believe everyone has a right to healthful, clean and affordable food. We think knowing where our food comes from is powerful, and we hope our magazine, website and newsletters inspire readers to get to know and support our local growers, fishers, chefs, vintners and food artisans.
