Santa Cruz to get Assembly + Pop Up

BgNwiY1CcAAgqxcFebruary 11, 2014 – The owners of Penny Ice Creamery in Santa Cruz had hoped to open their new Pacific Ave. restaurant Assembly by Valentine’s Day, but now they’re predicting an “end of the month” opening for the eatery and a brand new event space next door they call Pop Up. The marquee on Pop Up went up today and the first event has been scheduled for March 3. It’s a two-course lunch featuring talented SF chef Anthony Myint—of Mission Chinese and Commonwealth. The 200 sq ft space will not only allow Assembly to feature visiting chefs, it will operate as an occasional retail outlet and a place for community get togethers, according to co-owners Zach Davis and Kendra Baker. The tireless duo have produced a 2 min video to introduce Pop Up. You can view it here. They also hosted a sold out sneak preview of the Assembly kitchen with executive chef Carlo Espina last week at the del Mar Theater in conjunction with the screening of the acclaimed documentary film Spinning Plates. These are some images of the food, which Baker said drew on the menus of the new restaurant, as well as the Penny and the Picnic Basket.
