Big Sur Shuttle to Start Saturday

June 27, 2017 – Tourists will start trickling back into Big Sur on Saturday thanks to a new shuttle bus service to be operated daily by Sur Transportation.

The company has a very complete webpage here that explains everything about the service, but basically visitors will be allowed to park at Andrew Molera State Park ($10) and take a ten-passenger van ($5) to the trail that crosses Pfeiffer Canyon and be picked up on the other end of the trail in a different van that will make stops on the so-called “Big Sur Island” at places such as Nepenthe, Big Sur Deli and Hawthorne Gallery.

The service will be operated daily from noon to 8pm using two vans on the north side and two on the south side of the Pfeiffer Canyon bridge, which collapsed during heavy winter storms in February. Mudslides along Highway One to the south have left residents effectively cut off from the world and severely impacted Big Sur businesses that depend on tourists. (See EMB Summer issue article “After the Storm” here.)

“This is a unique time in Big Sur’s history and we are going to try to use it to educate people on how to tread lightly when they visit,” says Weston Call, who drives for Sur Transportation. Visitors will be given a passbook with trail info, stories about Big Sur culture and guidelines to follow.

The company will have two vans operating on each side of the canyon to start and be able to expand the service if necessary.
