Seafood Watch Lands Red Lobster

May 15, 2018 – In an important step towards the sustainability of our oceans, Red Lobster—the nation’s largest seafood restaurant chain—is partnering with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch  program and promising to buy only Seafood Watch recommended products by 2025.

“Because of our size and scale, we can use our influence to drive positive change in the industry and lead the way in sustainable and responsible seafood sourcing,” said Kim Lopdrup, CEO of the Orlando, Florida based chain“Red Lobster is committed to taking a leadership position in conserving and protecting every kind of seafood we source. Our partnership with Seafood Watch is the natural next step in keeping our commitments and driving continuous improvement within our seafood supply chain.”

The aquarium’s Seafood Watch program has 379 direct business partners, including 197 restaurant partner locations, according to Restaurant News. The partnership with Red Lobster will add 700 restaurant locations.

“We applaud Red Lobster for its commitment. It sends a strong signal to the marketplace: Fishing fleets and aquaculture producers will be rewarded for adopting practices that support healthy ocean ecosystems. Ultimately, that will mean better choices for everyone who enjoys seafood,” Monterey Bay Aquarium executive director Julie Packard said in a news release.
