Companion Bakeshop to Open Second Location in Aptos

April 17, 2018 – Known for its crusty sourdough breads and seasonal pastries, Companion Bakeshop is getting ready to open its second location, in Aptos Center shopping center.

“It’s going to be a duplicate of our westside location, a true neighborhood bakery,” says owner Erin Lampel.

The space at 7486 Soquel Drive—formerly occupied by Heather’s Patisserie—will include a café serving Cat & Cloud Coffee and a retail area. There is an enormous kitchen in the back of the building which will be dedicated to pie and pastry production. All bread will continue to be made at Companion’s westside location and trucked over to the Aptos shop daily.

Workers are busy upgrading the kitchen area and will begin a build out of the café once permits are in place. “There’s a lot of work ahead, but we’re excited and it’s worth it,” Lampel said, adding that she hopes to begin using the kitchen by summer and open to the public in late summer or fall.

“We never thought we would have a second location, but this will allow us to see more of our friends in the Aptos area,” she says. “The owners of the building are real Companion fans and asked me five or six times before I finally agreed to come see the property. It took some coaxing.”

Companion and Cat & Cloud are also partners in a bakery/cafe at Abbott Square in downtown Santa Cruz. Lampel, a graduate of the Agroecology Program at UC Santa Cruz, started out by baking pies to sell at the roadside farm stand of Pie Ranch in Pescadero. She and her husband Jeremy started the bakeshop in its current Mission St. location in 2010.
